Seattle Slew
I had only been a racing fan for three years when Seattle Slew came on the scene.
This was my first triple crown winner.
This horse is what the triple crown is all about. |

Cigar
He captured peoples hearts with his sixteen race winning streak.
I found him fascinating because he looked so different at times.
When I saw him in his stall, I was disappointed because he looked somewhat small and ordinary but the minute he got ready to race he looked like a warrior. |

Holy Bull
I did this painting in 1994, after he won the Travers Stakes in Saratoga.
It was painted for a friend of mine who loved him. |

John Henry
I used to go to Santa Anita anytime he would race.
I loved this gutsy gelding.
He was very popular with the fans, and raced until he was nine.
This painting is of him with Chris McCarron. |

Secretariat a "Portrait"
I did this portrait of Secretariat because I didn't think I did a good job of painting him in prior attempts.
I always though that if I would have seen him race it would have been easier.
After much research and looking at many photos, I think I captured his essence. |

Secretariat "A Look Back"
While I was in art school I kept seeing things about Secretariat on Time magazine.
I had never been to a race.
I wondered what all the fuss was about a triple crown winner.
When I fell in love with the sport the following year I knew that one day I would paint Secretariat.
This was my first painting of him |

Easy Goer
When I first saw Easy Goer I was in the paddick at Saratoga photographing another horse to do a portrait for the owners.
As I was lokking through the lens I caught a glimpse of the most georgeous chestnut horse I have ever seen.
I knew I was looking at something special. |

Alysheba
I asked my husband Lee who the horse was standing below us under a tree in the paddock at Keeneland.
It was Alysheba's maiden race.
I bet him.
He came in second.
They found he needed throat surgery, then he went to California where I got to see him race more.
I loved the way he bowed his head in the post parade. He and Chris McCarron were a handsome pair. |

Ruffian
I cried for 3 days when this filly lost the match race with Foolish Pleasure and her life.
She was, and is to most, the best female to ever step foot on a racetrack.
It wasn't just her color and size; there was something magical about her beyond words.
I wanted to do a portrait of her that showed her as the powerful presence she was, but with a somber tone. |

Seabiscuit
I didn't know much about Seabiscuit until the book and than the movie.
I was so inspired that I wanted to paint him.
This is him winning the 1938 race with War Admiral. |

The Classic
This painting is from the 1987 Breeder's Cup classic race betweek Ferdinand and Alysheba.
I loved Alysheba and had been Ferdinands win in the 1986 Kentucky Derby, Ferdinand won.
As a note, my son Dustin was born in 1986 when I was looking at a list of Baptismal names, Ferdinand was on it.
That is his Baptismal name. |
